Presently, just a few companies in Moldova offer services for construction of prefabricated buildings from sandwich panels. But very often the Customer is facing great problems during the construction works, especially during installation of panels. Also the Customer deals with violation of delivery time of sandwich panels, finishing elements, profiles, self-drilling screws, materials needed for installation and with gross violations of construction technology, substitution of the original materials for poor quality products.

Sometimes the installation of sandwich panels is carried out by unskilled workers who don’t have proper experience and knowledge in working with sandwich panels. With all this “outrage” the cost of construction remains to be the market and the quality of work is very low. Very often such an improper work is finished with big financial losses for the customer! If to left sandwich panels based on mineral wool out of door they become useless and lose all their thermal insulating properties. The improper-mounted panels can cause big gaps, lack of thermal insulation and waterproofing of the building. It was a short list of what can happen due to an incorrect choice of the construction company.

“Promstroi-Grup” will help you to perform properly the panels’ installation and the assembly of joints, to fit competently mounting hardware and accessories and to choose installation equipment. Thus, we will help you to reduce the construction cost. We have an extensive experience in building pre-fabricated buildings. We have built a considerable amount of them. We have highly qualified specialists, competent installers and reliable suppliers of sandwich panels. We have all necessary documents, licenses and permits for the design, construction. We also have all necessary modern equipment that is used in the construction.

Sandwich panels protection

Top and bottom panels’ sides are provided with a protective film to prevent painted surfaces from damage during transportation, handling and installation. Before installation the film on the inside of panels should be removed. The film on the outside is removed immediately after the end of works. It can be removed during installation in that places where it is necessary (for example, from longitudinal joint between two panels, under the screws and on the frame. . .).

Our partners-manufacturers recommend to keep the factory film of the sandwich panels mounted on the roof. Especially it refers to the areas where are located metal scrap yards or sites selling steel scrap.

In case of panels long-time storage the film must be removed no later than 3 months. When storing the panels out of door it is necessary to protect them from the sun because otherwise the removal of the film may be difficult.

For cutting of panels during installation use only tools that provide cold cuts because high temperatures can damage the corrosion-resistant coating of the sheet where it is immediately adjacent to the cut. For this reason the use of grinding machines for this purpose is forbidden! All small metal particles that result from cutting and drilling should be immediately removed from the panel surface. During welding operations in the immediate closeness to the panels should be taken special precautions in order not to damage them.

Do not put any marks or notches by nails or similar sharp objects that may damage the protective layer of the steel sheet.

When storing the panels should be observed following rules:

  • It is recommended to store the bundles in original package which provides the necessary water resistance.
  • When storing the panels in the open air they should be wrapped in cardboard to be protected from the sun, otherwise the removal of the protective film may be difficult. At the end of three months the film is recommended to be removed.
  • Bundles are putted on level and stable pallets to prevent bending under their weight and sliding especially in winter when the ice is accumulated on the film.

Horizontal installation

Panels packed in bundles and delivered to the construction site are marked in accordance with the Customer project. Bundles should be placed on the storage platform so as to be allowed the access to those panels which are mounted in the first place. If necessary, the cutting of panels to size is carried out before their installation on the frame. Installation of panels begins from below, from the foundation (base) and from any angle, but with the panel that rests on the butt.

The base for the first (lower) panel is prepared depending on the project. The horizontal guides (U-shaped profile or angle section with the thickness of rolled steel not less than 1,0 mm) are fastened to the mounting base (concrete). It is made using special anchors (spacing 500-600 mm) or self tapping screws (to the beam / girder - spacing 500 mm). Preliminary in the guide rails should be made holes for mounting to the foundation. Guides rails should be fixed on the foundation by level to ensure horizontal position of the mounted panels. If necessary, between the guide rails and the base, guide rails and the panel is laid sealant.

If the frame structure is made of concrete it requires panel pre-drilling at the attaching points.

When the panel is fixed the following actions are carried out:

  • The frame is made of metal - the panel is attached to the frame columns without panel and frame pre-drilling using self tapping screws and a metal drill.
  • The frame is made of concrete - the panel is attached to the frame columns with panel and frame pre-drilling directly through the fixed panel using special anchors or self tapping screws for concrete.

Sandwich panels fastening is performed using special screws equipped with a special rubber seal. It should be taken into account that the length of the screw must be greater than the thickness of the panel and frame with 10-20 mm. A standard type of connection during installation of the sandwich panels is the interlock. Not so long ago it was thought that the best form of installation was the lock seam. But it has been unreliable. Such an installation of sandwich panels was not justified and during the construction began to appear defects. That’s why presently is applying only the interlock installation.

The fixing element must be installed no less than 30 mm from the margin of the panel.

The number of fixing elements on the panel must comply with the project. Usually are fixed 2 units per each support with the space across the width 900 mm and 1200 mm of the panel. In addition, in the case of the concrete frame it should be taken into account that the distance from the margin of the column to the axis of the fixing element must be not less than 30 mm. You should always be careful when using fixing elements in order not to deform the panel surface.

Once is mounted one wall of the structure you can proceed with installation of the next walls similar to the stated above. Don’t forget that in the first place are mounted end-to-end panels.

Corner connections are mounted similar to the butt connections.

When the installation of panels is completed the installation of moulded elements begins in accordance with the attachment points of the panels. Installation is carried out in the “bottom-up” direction starting with the installation of the cill. Then, in any sequence are mounted the rest of the moulded elements. There is a single condition: the overlap of vertically arranged moldings is set from top to bottom in order to avoid the ingress of moisture under the moldings. If necessary, the overlapping is treated with sealant.

After all the others are installed windows and doors with appropriate elements such as frames, cills and others.

During sites construction sandwich panels can’t act as supporting elements, each panel must “work” under the influence of temperature, wind and other loads as a separate unit. Therefore, when using sandwich panels in the construction all these features should be taken into account in the project.

Vertical installation

In principle, vertical installation doesn’t differ from horizontal, however should be paid particular attention to the necessity of providing sufficient effort during jointing adjacent panels that is very difficult when using panels of considerable length and weight.

The jointing of panels is carried out by means of special clamping devices to provide reliable connections of interlocking parts. The jointing of panels by any other means is not allowed.

Vertical installation of sandwich panels can be used for partitions inside the building, as well as for covering the internal walls of existing buildings.
